The British Ex-Forces in Business Awards is the world’s largest celebration of military veterans in business. The annual programme and event uncover the achievements of ex-military, presenting them as important role models for current and future service leavers. The awards highlight the military-gained skills and values that have helped enable their business career success and recognise the organisations that have supported them.
Captain Mark Burby has been selected as finalist for the Lifetime Achievement Award. This award celebrates the achievements of service leavers throughout their whole career, both in the military and their accomplishments after leaving the military. Considering each candidate’s contributions to defending British freedom during their time in the forces, as well as what they have contributed to British life, society and the economy through their achievements since leaving the forces.
FROM MARINE TO BILLION DOLLAR FIRSTS
After completion of his service as a Royal Marine Commando Mark’s business career, through resettlement training, started as a Corporate Finance Manager with a large UK financial institution. The knowledge and experience gained in business implementation, financing and operations were the foundation of an impressive and multifaceted career.
Becoming a highly successful senior executive, CEO, and founder of several dynamic convention-defying businesses Mark has over 25 years’ experience in the UK, Europe, and Internationally.
Launching businesses and implementing high-value business development programs in the aviation, leisure, retail and property sectors with an aggregate value of over £250m. For example, this included the creation and operations of the Reebok Sports Clubs, which the media described as Europe’s largest, most refined and totally unique Urban Country Clubs. Also, the most recent example is being the founder and principal of an aviation infrastructure organisation with formidable industry stakeholders. The $5Bn business was the successful combination of blue-chip industry engagement, government export finance and Sovereign/Government engagements. This global first is cross-fertilising hospitality, luxury brand & aviation business sectors.
He has also selflessly committed his time and effort to philanthropic charitable causes, including setting up and delivering a full helicopter Search & Rescue service covering more than 4,000 square miles of airspace to the emergency services and having experienced over 250 winch rescue cycles as captain. The Post Office issued a 1st Class postage stamp in Mark’s honour for this.

2020 had a record-breaking 500+ nominations who demonstrated outstanding business achievements underpinned by military-gained values. The finalists of the British Ex-Forces in Business Awards are selected by an independent panel of 45 esteemed judges led by the former head of the Royal Navy, Admiral Sir George Zambellas GCB DSC ADC DL FRAeS, and then announced at the high-profile Awards Ceremony & Gala Dinner.
This is a flagship gathering of the business, veteran and military communities, and the largest awards dinner of its kind anywhere in the world; a unique and inspirational event aimed at recognising the strong synergies between military skills/values and business excellence and promoting a positive narrative of veterans as assets to employers across all sectors.
